  John went into business as a carrier when he moved from Pickmere to Eccles. When he died the business past to his son Fred Ward Sumner. He was killed in 1918 serving as a driver with the Royal Field Artillery, after the war his widow Lily sold the business to Pickford's, a rivel company, and now one of the biggest in the country.
