- Hector began formal art training in 1856 at the age of 16, under Edward Cranch and he later attended the National Acadamy of Design in New York. He moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where he resided with his relder brother Thomas and had a portrait Studio on Main Street from 1859-61. He entered Confederate service as a private on 28th Oct 1861 in Company A 17th Virginia Infantry, and he was badly wounded in his left knee and captured at the Battle of Frazer's Farm on 30th June 1862. Following his release, he was assignes to the Confederate War Department in Richmond as a topographer. After the war Hector's reputation as an artist grew and by 1870 he moved to New York City, where he maintained a studio. He fell seriously ill and died in New York in the care of his sister, Eliza ( Eaches ) Fendall, who had temorarily relocated to that city in an effort to nurse him back to good health.
He was the subject of an unusually florid and sentimental memorial in the Alexandria Gazette ( 10 July 1875 ).
