- Army Record.
Enlisted 23rd September 1902, Private 9126 Lancashire Fusiliers, of 19 Nield Street, Ancoats Manchester. He attained the position of Sergant Major.
Served in France 22nd August 1914, 27th August 1914. Sufferd from Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media, from a blow to the head with a rifle butt, by a german soldier. Taken Prisoner of war, taken to Germany 27th Aug 1914 untill 22nd Dec 1916, then to Switzerland 22nd Dec 1916 to 9th September 1917, Then repatriated to England 11th Sept 1917. He also sufferd from a weekness of the abdomin caused by a shortage of food whilst a prisoner of war in Germany 1914-15-16. While he was in Germany he was treated in Sennelager Hospital, Dulman Hospital and Mindern Hospital, and ended up in the 1st London General, Camberwell, on his return to England. He was a member of a National Health approved society - Great Central Railway, Manchester. and his last employer before enlisting was the Bradford Colliery Lord Lane, Bradford, Manchester, where he was employed as a collier. His address on his discharge was 7 John Shaw Street, Eccles. He was discharged from the Lancashire Fusiliers 3rd Nov 1917. Physically Unfitt.
On the 25th June 1918 James joiner the Army Service Corps (ASCHT) at Warrington and on the 27th June was posted to Blackheath where he was a driver, On the 13th October 1918 he was posted to the Army Reserve, and Discharged "surplus to army requirments 14th Decenber 1918, cause of discharge Deafness. He was awarded a Pension of 13/9d a week.
he was described as 5' 5" tall, Hair colour Brown (turning white on discharge), Eyes gray, complexion fresh. Distinctive Marks; Tattoo of a Parrot on Forearm, and a mole on his wright wrist.
Awarded the Mons Star WW1. [1939 census = ARP warden Eccles Corporation]
In WW2 James was an Air Raid Warden. gassed and sent to Switzerland to recover.
His hobby was making violins
