  After his father died in 1805 William was brought up by his maternal grandparents on their farm and attended Stirling High School and Ediburgh University. In 1826/7 he gave warnings to Charles Darwin, then aged 17, of the forthcoming controversies between Science and Christian Beliefs. As a medical student he was a Radical and an athiest, welcoming the changes in revolutionery France and supporting democratic reform of the Church, Monachy and the Aristocracy. William A.F. Brown was one of the most significant asylum doctors of the nineteenth century at Montrose Asylum (1834-1838) in Angus, and later at Critchton Royal in Dumfries (1838-1857). He introduced activities for patients including writing, art group activity and drama. In 1857 he was appionted Commissioner in Lunacy for Scotland and in 1866 he was elected President of the Medico-Psycholgical Association. Census Listings: 1841 Brownhall, Dumfries, Scotland. age 35.
