- British Army Enlistment Report:
Name. Charles Welch, age 31 years & 9 months. height 5' 3?", weight 137 lbs. Physical development good. Blind in right eye and flat feet. Fit for service abroad.
Attested 12/12/15 at Rochester. To Army Reserve 13/12/15, Mobilized 7/5/17 (Sapper, Royal Engineers) 498577. recall 1916, Made application to not be recalled on the grounds that it would have been a great loss to him if he had to give up his business of Greengrocer & Milkman, as he had taken it on to let a nephew who was only 20 years of age go into the Navy. He stated that he was asked to buy the business as it had been in his wifes family in the last 10 years. He also stated that he had a wife, four children and an invalide mother to support . His partition failed and he was told he was reqiured to rejoin his colours on the 2nd April 1917 at Gravesend no later that 10am . A travel document was also issued giving him rail travel from Cluiffe to Gravesend. However on the 11th May 1916 he was given an Absolute Exemption from militery service. Aug 7th 1916, his circumstances were again inspected by the Military, and this time Charles stated that his business included 21 gallons of Milk a Day, and a grocery round twice a wee. Takings were about ?4 per week. . The tribunal
decided that he would be exempted from being called up for Military service untill 4th May 1917. re enlisted 7/5/17 Labour corps. Transferred to Royal Engineers Training Centre, Deganwy. Posted 18/9/17 to Labour Corps Carmarthan, posted 11/1/19 Maidstone.
