- John fortinatos was in the merchant navy, and there are a few records of him being on ships and various ports. Interestingly he was convicted of manslaughter in a cork court around 1910. There is a nice newspaper article about it. It seems when he was released he disembarked at Cardiff moved to Barry and started a new life, I don't believe he was involved in anything else but continued as a donkey man, and died in 1939. He was given a service medal for the great war.

Donkey Man The individual responsible for the Donkey engine, a steam-powered winch engine, which could be used to load or unload cargo, raise larger sails, or power pumps. It was invented in 1881 Engineer. Certificated officer in charge of a vessel's engines who also made repairs and adjustments to the machinery.
Johansen Fortunatos (born 1878) described as one of three Greek sailors whose job on the merchant ship SS Gledhow was as a Donkeyman. Accused of the murder of George West widower from Sunderland and ships cook who shared a birth with Johanes. Other greeks were Nicolas Kentogiannes and E. Lianakas both ship firemen. All members were described as being worse for liquor and witness said that Johanes was carrying a knife. Murder occurred on 5th October 1910 and Johanes was sentenced to 6 years penal servitude for manslaughter. afterwards reduced to 3 years discharged 24 March 1913, address Cardiff, Occ Sailor.
