John Kentish married three times. By his first wife, Ellen, who died in 1889, there was a son James Kentish (b.and d.1884). His second wife was Susannah, sister of Ellen. This marriage was probably illegal because of the Marriage Act of 1835 which forbade marriage to a deceased wife's sister. However, this Act was frequently ignored and was repealed in 1907. In 1901 John, now aged 43, an electro-copper plater, and Susannah were living at 77 Barford Road, Rotton Park, Ladywood. Susannah died in 1909. His third wife was a Welsh lady, Letitia May, who was evidently not liked by the family. They lived in Stirling Road, Edgbaston. John Kentish is remembered as running a friendly society at the Hope & Anchor, Edmund Street, where in his later years he was assisted by his nephew, Charles, son of Theophilus.
