- Joseph was the founder of the Independant Labour Party. H e also wrote his autobiography "A Potential Poet". in which he tells tales of family and Life around Hollinwood along with dialect poems. A book was written around 2004 about Joseph called "Joseph Burgess 1853-1934 Founder of the Independant Labour Party" (Studies in British History): Kevin McPhillips: Books.
The House where Joseph was born recieved a blue plaque in 2007.
