- Early in the reighn of Henry VIII, the de Tetlow family acquired the Bardsley estate and in 1551, Lawrence de tetlow was the ho;der of six properties in Ashton -under-Lyne. he died in 1582 and was then holding three of these properties. (History of Ashton by Wm Bowman). In the visitation of 1571, Lawrence Tetlow was presented because "He hath kept a whore this 20 years and hath diverses children by her and disinherited his lawful children, keeping his bastards like gentleman". During the previous 20 years there had been six episcopal visitations at which Tetlow's offence had goen undetected.
