When Ellen first appeared on the census with William, in 1861, She was described as single, with a child, John Maddick aged 1. Ten years later she has two children William John Maddick and Sarah Jemima Maddick, aged 11 & 5. As she was living with William in this period, we may assume that he is the father. In the 1881 census They are all listed as Topham.
