James was a private in the Lancashire Fusiliers 16th Battalion No: 15216, Killed in action when the dunhallow trenches were rent by an enormouse explosion.
Sgt Arthur Smith tried to save his life. He managed to rescue four men and won the military medal. he went back and tried to drag Samuel Hamer and James Smith back, but they died despite his efforts. He went out the following knight and covered the bodies up.
