William made his will on 20 May 1790, proved 22 June 1790, which he signed with the shakiest of hands, indicating that he was in a
"low state of health" but of "Sound disposing mind and memory"
In his will he left all his household & Kitchen Furniture to his Housekeeper Mary Buller.
Her stated that his Plantation was to be sold, and then William Eachus grandson of my brother John Eachus ?20 to be paid to him when he is 21 years of age. To George Pierce of the Township of Goshen ?20, payable one year after my death.
I also give to the Aforsaid Mary Buller the remainder of my estate.
Executors: George Pierce & John Buller.
The will was contested by Benjamine Eachus, saying it was not the genuine will.

    Papers relative to William Eachus Estate 1790;
John Gregory being duly swarn did declare&say that when he agreed with William Eachus for his plantation he was to have had it for 3 years, that writings were drawn in thay manner. When they were brought to William Mary Buller said one year was long
enough, to which William replied he believed it was, they also made a verbal agreement Eachus was to help the deponant about his hay & corn and in return the deponant was to draw his firewood, then in the fall when they were getting fodder William
assisted in getting two rows & said he had h____? ____? pointed him but now he would stick by him untill the fodder was all got_ that when Eachus went home from the cornfield Mary Buller told him he should not help about the corn next day but should
stay and pair apples, for she could not attend to it. That next day William stuck close to the apples. The deponant also had agreed with William for a part of the Garden, but Mary would not suffer him to have it__ That he heard Mary say that Rettew had
been at a good deal of pains to clear the water Course, but he should not have the use of it__That when things went wrong she would tell this deponant she would take care he should not stay there another year.
Ezekiel Griffiths being duly affirmed did declair & say that about 11 years ago he met with William Eachus & agreed to rent his place at ?20 per annum & William to allow the Affirmed ?12 for his board & keeping a creature, that when Mary Buller
understood they had agreed, she declared if he did rent it she would leave him & have nothing to say to him, William held down his head & made no reply to her & the bargain broke off.
Ben Ogden being duly affirmed did declair & say that about 4 or 5 years ago William Eachus had advertised his place to be sold at public vendor this affirned went to the sale the old man appeared cool to him. the affirmed interrogated him respecting
it. Willia, said, "what has Mary Buller done to thee that thee & thy boys should abuse her, this was denied by the affirmed. William said Mary had so informed him he enquired of William what he would have for the place, that upon this Mary interferred
& said he could not sell it without recieving ?300, that William afterwards insisted upon that sum. The bargain dropped.
Thomas Cheyney Esq, one of the Judges in this court did also declair and say, that some time ago when Mary Buller was brought before him on suspicion of being concerned in the robbery of William Rettew, William Eachus also appeared at same time, that
this examinant took an oppertunity with William to discourse with him respecting his suffering a woman of such bad character & who had brought him unto such difficulties, to be about his house, William in reply disclosed it was not in his power to get
her away, though he was sensible she had ruined him. He was advised by this Examinant to get out of his place & take board with one of his honest neighbors, Eachus appeared much pleased with the proposal & said he would put it in execution & gave his
word she should not live two weeks longer with him. And at different times afterwards expressrd a very great desire to be relieved from her, that he was under some obligation of dept to her and in other respects under such control that this examiner
had the perception to apprehend he had not resolution to rid himself of her and so much under her influence that it appeared he had not any will of his own.
And the court having heard the parties by their respective attorneys & considering the evidence were of opinion & did decree that the paper writing as aboveset forth, ought not to be deemed & taken as the genuine last Will & Testament of the said
William Eachus deceased. Whereupon George Pierce one of the Legtees and nominated an Executor on the said paper writing has appealed from the decree of the said court being disatisfied therewith and has entired into bond with two sureties in the form
of five hundred pounds upon condition that he the said appellant shall prosecute his appeal with effect in the high court of Error and Appeals, or otherwise if he shall fail to prosecute his just Will, then he shall abide the decree of the High Court.
He the said George Peirce duly affirmed that the propety in dispute and now in controversy exceeds the value of four hundred bushels of wheat.

    Background;
The history of West Chester is intimately connected to its role as a transportation hub. West Chester is situated on high ground between the Brandywine and Chester Creek watersheds, at a point that attracted travellers since the earliest days of
recorded history, The Great Minquas Trail of the Lenni Lenape passed through the area in the 17th century, connecting settlements and trading posts in the lower Schuylkill Valley with fur-producing regions to the west.
The first roads in the area were laid out in the early eighteenth century. Although neither the "Old Lancaster Road" (US30) not the "Old Baltimore Pike"(US1) passed through West Chester, William Penn's "Street Road"(PA926) passed a short distance to the south, and the "Strasburg Road" passed along what later became the north edge of the borough. A road from Wilmington to Reading (PA100) passed directly through the centre of the future borough, and another early road(PA100) ran southwest from the site to Jefferis' Ford on the Brandywine, near modern Lenape Park.
In 1762, a local cooper named Phineas Eachus applied to the Pennsylvania Legilsature for permission to open a "public house" for travellers on the Wilmington-to-Reading Road, at the intersection (presently Gay and High Streets) with the road from Jefferis' Ford to Philadelphia. Permission was granted, and Eachus' house became the "Turks Head Tavern", named for the sign used to mark its location. That Tavern, and its surrounding community, became the nucleus for the borough of West Chester, which was incorperated on March 20, 1799.

    Notes:

Notes and information from Jerri Garifalo (Wickersham family Researcher)
Sampson went to war [American Independance] in 1780, but he would have returned in 1781, the dates of his children's births with Elizabeth [Jackson] are 1780, 1781, 1782 and 1784. The Church records further note that Sampson deserted Elizabeth about 1787. as a result he wea disowned by the Society of Friends on 14th February 1788. Elizabeth [Jackson] then had a child with Reuben Barney who she claimed was her husband; Their child Mary was born 9th April 1792.
He reportedly left them in Chester Co, Pa and went to Rose Hill, Mercer County, Kentucky, and married Elizabeth Lessinger.
The Daughters of the American Revolution patriot Index lists him as a private in Andrew Boyds Fifth Company, 8th Battalion, 5th Co, from Chester County Pennsylvania in 1780, which gives his birth as 20th January 1751, and lists his second wife as Elizabeth Sessinger (sic). the Wickersham Family History recorded by Jerri Garofalo and published at Genealogy.com, states that Sampson was born in the Family Home at Kennett Square. He and his second wife Elizabeth Lessenger located themselves on a tract of land about 10 miles south of Harrodsburg. Their Oldest boy Daniel Boone Wickersham was named in honor of the Indian Fighter and Trail Blazer Daniel Boone, a neighbour whom they new and respected. Sampson Bought and sold considerable amounts of land in Mercer County, establishing a large tract of land on Carmickels Creek.
Why Sampson and Elizabeth [Lessinger] wanted to live in KY is a great mystery because it was certainly not an easy life. They lived a few miles west of Harrodsburg / Harrods's fort along a creek. There is no written information about what their home was like. Log cabins were typical and gave a good fortification against the elements, beasts and Indians. They often contained little view ports for firing at the enemy. This is the environment that Sampson and Elizabeth [Lessinger] brought at least 12 children into the world and raised them. It is rather difficult to imagine little toddlers in a crowded house while mother made bread, cut up the bear her husband just killed, rendered tallow or washed clothes.
It is not known for sure what date Sampson moved to KY or if he went with his new wife Elizabeth Lessinger or met her there. I have found a report of a large group of women travelling to KY to settle in order to find husbands. For the most part it was a rugged man's world. Supplies were very slim and so the provision and home life were built around the most rudimentary of things. Women did not have stoves but cooked over an open fire (either outdoors or from the fireplace in the house.) Laundry was done at the riverside on rocks or over a boiling cauldron and then pounding the garment with a heavy dowel over a tree stump. There was no longer the luxury of stylish garments but a few necessary items that if not worn hung from a peg on the wall of the cabin. Gourds were collected in which were stored items like maple syrup, soft soap, cornmeal, salt, and other precious supplies. Out of these gourds the women also made; egg baskets, sewing baskets, water dippers. From the rafters she would hang bunches of herbs, red peppers, smoked hams, tobacco, and yarn and more.
Lights were scarce ad precious. They were made with bear's oil or tallow, with twisted rags, pine pitch or open fire. Rain water was captured from the bark gutters into home-made barrels. Houses had no inner plaster, but had wooden shutters but no glass. Paper smeared with Bears grease served as glass windows.
Everything was homemade because transporting things from VA was extremely difficult. In time things were transported up and down the Mississippi and Ohio rivers but this was still expensive.
The roads leading from Virginia to Kentucky were few, in fact one called the Cumberland Gap which was one of the projects that Daniel Boone had been commissioned to do. Other "roads" were merely trails formed by the Indians and Animals. The travel was very rugged and in fact I found a quote by a travelling bishop who went to Kentucky in 1786 who said. " On the 7th day of the journey we reached Richmond, VA (where I live) and on the 10th Lexington, VA (after which they cross the Blue Ridge Mountains and many more days and miles before KY). I was strangely out done for want of sleep. Our way is over mountains, steep hills, deep rivers, and muddy creeks, a thick growth of reeds for miles together, and no inhabitants but wild beasts and savage men. I slept about one hour the first night and about two the last. We ate no regular meals, our bread grew short, and I was much spent. Along our way we saw the graves of the slain, 24 in one camp, who had a few nights previous been murdered by the Indians. Thus the fresh graves of the dead signalled us of the perils that awaited us. "
Along the trail there were but a few forts that were built as a place for storage, fortification, and protection. During an uprising the locals would rush to the forts where they would stay for as long as was necessary. In the year 1777 the residents stayed in the fortifications for a full year. Indian uprisings consisted of raiding (stealing), and burning down homes, stealing produce from the gardens, destroying the remains. The massacres that happened by the Indians and the white are beyond imaginable.

    Notes:

Oak Virginia was 20 miles from Laesborgh

Daniel lived in Loudoun County, Virginia. It appears he was well regarded in the community.
Daniel and two others (Frances W Luckett and Samuel Singleton) were appointed on December 31,
1818 by Burr Powell, President of the Board of Directors of Ashby's Gap Turnpike Company,
to serve as official inspectors for the purpose of verifying to the Governor that portions of the Turnpike were in fact completed. This appointment was confirmed by the Governor. On December 4, 1819, the three certified to the Governor that the subject portions were completed. (Calendar of Virginia State Papers, Vol 10, p480, p492)

Daniel became a miller and was part owner of at least two mills. He acquired a one half interest in his first mill, along with fellow Quaker Joseph Gore in 1803. The mill was part of a 196 acre tract located along Beaver Creek ( a tributary of Goose Creek). and then along with Robert Massey Powell he built his second mill in 1808 on a fifty acre tract located along Goose Creek. The area of the mill came to be called "Millsville" Two years later Daniel sold his half interest to Robert Powell. and acquired interests in at least two other mills, and was a party to more than two dozen real estate instruments during his life.

On 12th April 1815 Daniel Eachus was appointed to the board of directors of the Loudoun Company, the first known bank in Loudoun County. The Board of this institution consisted mostly of Quaker businessmen from Loudoun County. Unfortunately, in 1816, the Virgunia General Assembly, dominated by eastern Virginians who opposed the creation of additional unchartered banks, passed an act supressing all unchartered Virginia banks, including the Loudoun Company.

Daniel and his children were practising Quakers, and they belonged to the Southfork Meeting, which was an indulged meeting (branch) of the Goose Creek Monthly Meeting in the southern part of Loudoun County. Although Daniel seems to have been a "lapsed Quaker" one consequenc of which was that the Goose Creek MM Meeting Records for the relavent period contail only two references to him as a witness at Quaker wedding ceremonies, the last of these references was in 1795. As a "lapsed Quaker" member of the South Fork brance of the Goose Green MM, Daniel would have been in good company, for the more staid members of the Goose Creek MM were of the firm opinion that thier South Fork bretheren "Drank to excess, Fought, Gambled and in general were lax morally. ( Werner Janney and Asa Moore Janney, Ye Meeting Hous Small: A short Account of Friends in Loudoun County, Virginia, 1732-1980 [ Lincoln, Va p 154] ).

Daniel executed a deed regarding some property in Fauquieron 28 Nov 1829, and by the time of the 1830 U.S. census it appears he was living with his son Thomas. Daniel seems to disappear from the records altogether by 1834 and it is assumed he died about that year. He died intestate. As for his wife Mary, there is no record of her death or indeed whether she survived or predeceased Daniel.

It appears that Evans was a shrewd land trader and he bought and sold a number of farms during his lifetime. In addition he was also a substantial citizen. His name appears frquently as a witness on will and on other papers. At the time of his death,
he owned three farms, 110 acres in Upper Providence on which he lived and which he left to his son Emmor, 125 acres in Edgmont which he left to his sonEder, who had operated it since 1832, and 78 acres in Thornbury, which his executors were instructed
to sell. In his will he made specific bequests to his daughters and grandchildren, which totaled $10,000. And he specified that the proceeds from the Thornbury farm were to be divided equally among his heirs.
Evans owned the land in Upper Providence when he married Hannah. He appears on censuses 1800-50. The farm was at the upper end of Upper Providence next to Edgmont Township, with the Bishops as neighbours. The farm remained in the family untill 1914.
