Vaughn, a Humboldt National Bank management trainee, was killed in an automobile accident on Highway 299 two miles east of Hawkins Bar in Trinity County sometime early yesterday morning [May 19, 1966].
The tragedy was discovered by a road department who stopped to remove an automobile hub cap from the roadway, found broken glass and investigated further to find the wrecked car over the embankment. He was returning from a mission to assist the bank's Hoopa branch manager. The westbound vehicle had run off the roadway on a curve, plunged 30 feet down the 300-foot embankment, and crashed head-on into a pine tree which halted the drop. He apparently died instantly.
