Shacking Accident to a Railway Porter.
On Tuesday night last, a shocking accident happend at the Nuneaton Staion of the Midland Railway, to a porter names Charles Moreton, thirty years of age , living in Abbey Street. Between nine and ten o'clock a goods train was beoing shunted, and while the unfortunate man was in the act of uncoupling some wagons and standing on one of the buffers, hid foot accidentaly slipped in between them, the result of which was that [the] deceased fell down under the waggons his body being severely crushed. Some of the wheels also passed over his legs. He was picked up immediately, and Mr Nason, surgeon, who was promptley in attendance did all that surgical skill could suggest. The poor fellow was then conveyed to Liecester Infirmary, where, in a few hours afterwards death put an end to his sufferings. he leaves a wife and four children to deplore his loss. Fatal Accident.
An Inquest was held on November 10th on the body of Charles Moreton, the unfortunate man who was killed last week at Nuneaton. It appeared that the deceased was standing on the buffers of two trucks, which he was uncoupling, when the engine started and he fell on the ballast and several of the wagons passed over him. He had been employed as a signal porter ever since the line was opend. The Jury returned a verdict of " Accidental Death" and recommended that no servatn be permitted to uncouple waggons when a trail is in Motion. [Archive - Misc D M 31]
