She had to leave her job when she married Robert Eachus in 1914. After the start of WW1 Nan re-joined the Civil Service and one of her jobs was interviewing people qualifying for the newly-established Old age Pension. Nan was very much into spiritualism and the occult She claimed that when she lived in Windsor Terrace in the grounds of the Birmingham Oratory she, on more than one occasion, met the ghost of Cardinal Newman. No record of their father Walter's date of sailing has been found but based on the birth dates of the children it must have been in 1886 or 1887. Alfred, Walter and Gertrude were born in New York where their father continued his occupation as a bricklayer and builder and had an office on 46th Street. His business was listed in the New York telephone directory of 1900. He later became a building inspector for New York City. |

In 1942, Hyla and his wife, Alida, were living at 3435 Knox Place, Bronx, NYC and he remained an employee of the Department of Housing and Buildings. It is believed they later moved to Connecticut.
