In 1861 Theophilus Edward (5) aged 10, was a boarding pupil at the Blue Coat School, St.Philip's Churchyard in the town centre. Theophilus is later believed to have attended Five Ways Grammar School. There were two fellow pupils with the surname Bassett at the Blue Coat School but research indicates no direct relationship with Mary Anne Bassett. Both Theophilus and his brother, John Kentish, were nominated for the school of about 100 pupils aged 10-14 by the Bache family.
In 1871 Theophilus aged 20 was a clerk living at home. He married Eliza Baker in 1874 he developed literary interests and learnt Italian with a view to reading Dante and acting as an agent for Cassel's Sixpenny Classics. His demonstration set eventually passed to Eric. Theophilus became a clerk and bookkeeper the electro-plating industry. But by 1901 he was an electro-plater and gilder. He possibly rose to a more senior position but was not technically qualified, because at the age of 60 his employer, Mr Millward, said he felt the need to replace him by a technically-qualified manager. Theophilus talked him into delaying the change until he had chance to qualify. He then enrolled at Birmingham Technical School c.1911 (where he was remembered for many years afterwards) and took every certificate available in electro-plating, finishing, etc. (Brian Bucknall has in his possession Theophilus's algebra text-book, identified by his initials.) He kept his job until retirement was forced on him by a crippling accident - when he was passing a brewers dray on his bicycle, the leading offside horse reared and fell on Theophilus and his bicycle.
He was for many years churchwarden of All Saints Church. He brought a large family to the church where they filled a rented pew. If there was a visiting preacher or curate he would be asked to stay for Sunday dinner when there was always a roast. There was a long dining room table and a chaise longue at one side to accommodate a number of children on cushions. The grandchildren were brought to the church on All Saints Day which was a day of family reunion. Ralph reported that Christmas Day was also celebrated at his grandparents' house.
Theophilus was interested in classical music and had a pianola with many rolls of music. This pianola eventually passed to his son, William Claude. Theophilus is remembered as a small (height 5ft 3ins), bearded man with several eccentricities of speech. Evidently, in later life being keen on self-education, he spent his Sunday afternoons in the library of the Birmingham Institute.

1881 52 Brunswick Road, Kings Norton, Worcestershire, Head (m). age 28. Builder Employing 2 men. (81-340)

Henry and his brothers Walter and Alfred all became bricklayers. In 1881 Henry was a builder in Birmingham employing two men and living with his family of then five children at 52 Brunswick Road, Balsall Heath. His wife, Elizabeth n?ee Phipps, had been a nursemaid to at least two families in Birmingham. Elizabeth's family were from Madeley, Shropshire.
But within a year or so Henry had emigrated to New York together with his family although they did not travel together. He was followed by Alfred and then by Walter and his family.
Henry continued with his occupation as a bricklayer and biulder in New York and the family lived in the Flatbush district of Brooklyn.
The three brothers are commemorated by Bucknall Villas, Tiverton Road, Selly Oak and according to family lore, played a major role in the expansion of New York. No definitive record of Henry and Walter sailing to New York has yet been found. As Henry's family sailed in 1885 and Walter's family sailed in 1888, it seems Henry travelled well before Walter.

Henry married Elizabeth Phipps in 1873 in St John's, Ladywood. Birmingham. Elizabeth (daughter of Samuel Phipps and Unknown) was born in 1843 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England; died in 1915 in New York, America; was buried on 2 May 1915 in Evergreen Cemetery, New York.. 3. 4.  Margaret Emily BucknallMargaret Emily Bucknall Descendancy chart to this point (1.Mary1) was born in 1854 in Edgbaston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England; died in 1945.

    Notes:

    Census Listings;
1861 Laburnam Place, Bellis Street, Edgbaston, daughter. age 6. (61-383)

Emily married her eldest brother's best friend, William Pitt, a lawyer's clerk who died at the early age of 43. She and William had three daughters - Ethel, Nan, and Dorothy. Dorothy married Keith Dannett, a photographer, and lived at Thames Ditton. Keith had studios in Brighton, Croydon and in 1949 in Surbiton and in the late 1920s became President of the Royal Photographic Society.
Emily Pitt in the late 1920s she was a tiny, asthmatic, elderly lady with a parchment skin living most of the year in London flats with her crippled daughter Ethel and Ethel's former business partner Sister Clausen (nieceof Sir George Clausen, the landscape painter). They often moved, taking over the ends of leases. They also rented (?10 a year) a cottage on Caldey Island, near Tenby. Emily and her daughter, Ethel, had been in the nursing homes business.
Emily trained as a nurse at the time when surgery was being revolutionised by the introduction of Lister's Antiseptic Spray and was the senior of two night nurses at Birmingham General Hospital. Later, after the death of her husband, she opened a
nursing home at 16 Peak Hill Avenue, Sydenham, South London, under the patronage of Sir James Bruce (Physician-in-Ordinary to Queen Alexander). In 1901 she was living there with her daughters, Florence (aged 17) and Ethel (aged (16) plus two patients and a housemaid. It is reported that Emily at one time had another nursing home at Hindhead, Surrey.
Emily related three interesting events :-
    (i) She successfully hid the Chinese revolutionary Dr Sun Yat Sen (the first President of China after the overthrow of the Manchu Dynasty in 1911) from the Chinese Tongs in her nursing home for two years, following a failed uprising in 1895. He had been brought there by Sir James.
(ii) Sir James later brought a feeble-minded young aristocrat to be a permanent resident only for him to throw himself over a balcony to his death. Unknown to Emily, the young man had been earlier certified and as the home was not qualified to care for the insane the coroner recommended that Emily lose her nursing home licence.
(iii) In the years preceding WW1, great embarrassment was caused to Emily by her brother Samuel's son persisting in leaving passengers' luggage which he had stolen at London railway stations, his principal means of livelihood.
Ethel and her partner Clausen operated a nursing home at Easy Row, Birmingham in the 1920s. Later they moved to elegant premises, The Surgical Nursing Home, 84 Hagley Road, under the patronage of Sir Gilbert Darling, Dean of Birmingham University Medical School. But by the late 1920s Ethel's hip condition and Clausen's arthritis forced them into retirement. They, together with Emily, spent the years of WW2 on Caldey Island.

Margaret married William Pitt in 1882. William was born in 1850 in England; died in 1893 in England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

1881 269 Ladywood Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham. son. age 23, Electro Plater,

John Kentish married three times. By his first wife, Ellen, who died in 1889, there was a son James Kentish (b.and d.1884). His second wife was Susannah, sister of Ellen. This marriage was probably illegal because of the Marriage Act of 1835 which forbade marriage to a deceased wife's sister. However, this Act was frequently ignored and was repealed in 1907. In 1901 John, now aged 43, an electro-copper plater, and Susannah were living at 77 Barford Road, Rotton Park, Ladywood. Susannah died in 1909. His third wife was a Welsh lady, Letitia May, who was evidently not liked by the family. They lived in Stirling Road, Edgbaston. John Kentish is remembered as running a friendly society at the Hope & Anchor, Edmund Street, where in his later years he was assisted by his nephew, Charles, son of Theophilus.

John married Ellen Mould in 1882. Ellen (daughter of James Mould and unknown) was born in 1858 in (in/of) Birmingham, Warwickshire, England; died in 1889. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

1881 269 Ladywood Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham. son. age 21. Bricklayer

Alfred was unmarried and living at home in 1881 and identified sailing to New York on SS Erin from London, arriving April 1884. Alfred has not been positively identified in New York or anywhere in the USA or Canada. California is a possibility although evidence is slight. There is also the possibility he moved to North Bend, Nebraska and never married. Here, for many years, there was an Alfred Bagnall, labourer, born England in 1859. It may well be that the spelling of his name had become corrupted.

  7. 8.  Samuel Bache BucknallSamuel Bache Bucknall Descendancy chart to this point (1.Mary1) was born in 1862 in Edgbaston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England; died in 1938 in Darlington, Durham.

1911 73 Skinnergate, Darlington, Durham. Head married, age 45. Fish & Poultry Dealer.

Samuel Bache Bucknall, according to his family was a colourful character and named after his father's employer. He was identified in the 1881 census aged 18 living at home following his occupation as a fishmonger. In 1891 he was as a fish salesman living in North Leeds with his wife Annie and daughter Katherine aged 4. Katherine was born in Blackburn so this implies Samuel had previously worked there. As Olive Ida was born in York, the family must have moved there from Leeds. In 1901 Samuel was a fishmonger living with his family in Jesmond, which is close to North Shields, a then major fishing port. His wife Annie died in 1902 at Jesmond. Samuel married again in 1903 at Ancaster, near Grantham to Mary Fanny Hare who was a widow. Her husband, a farmer, had died in 1900 and Mary then ran the farm with two employees. It is a mystery how Samuel came to know Mary Hare who seems to have lived in Lincolnshire all her life. She brought a two-year-old daughter, Olive Hare, to live with them. This resulted in there being two Olives of almost similar age in the family but sadly Olive Hare died aged 15 in 1914.
Samuel was living in Darlington at the time of his second marriage and was described as a manager. It is believed he later had his own fish and poultry business in Skinnergate, Darlington. In Darlington, he was a Party Constituency Agent for the Liberal party and had the reputation of being able to secure the election of any candidate whose affairs were in his hands. He also organised charity cricket matches, one of which is recalled by Jack Hobbs in his memoirs.

Samuel married Annie Maria Stephens on 1 Feb 1885 in St Bartholomew, Edgebaston, Warwickshire,. Annie was born in 1861 in Womborne, Staffordshire, England; died in 1902 in Newcastle upon Tyne, [june qtr]. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Charles was identified in the 1891 census living in Aston with his wife, Mary E. and 10 months old daughter, Ellen. He was a brassfounder. Charles and Mary also had a son, Charles Walter born 1894 1qtr and Louis Theophilus, born 1905 but died in 1906. Charles Walter volunteered in 1914 and joined the West Yorkshire Regiment as an infantryman in September 1914. It appears he was discharged in December 1914 with a pension indicating he had been wounded.

Charles married Mary Elizabeth Morris in 1889 in Aston, Birmingham. Mary was born in 1870 in Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England; died in 1937 in Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

After the start of WW1 Nan re-joined the Civil Service and one of her jobs was interviewing people qualifying for the newly-established Old age Pension. Nan was very much into spiritualism and the occult She claimed that when she lived in Windsor Terrace in the grounds of the Birmingham Oratory she, on more than one occasion, met the ghost of Cardinal Newman.

    Notes:

Reginald served in the Durham light infantry during WW1 and was awarded two medals.
The Enigma that is Reginald Bucknall:
Reginald who was a casualty of WW1, was not listed in the 1911 census, even though his family was. This Suggests that he left home before his 18th Birthday. No record of his death during WW1, either in a military or Civilian capacity has been found both at Home, including Scotland, and Overseas. There are two seperate reports about Reginald, niether of which has been substantiated.
Report 1 came from Eric Bucknall who had heard the story from his great Aunt, Margery Emily Pitt (n?ee Bucknall). Margaret Emily Pitt was a nurse who ran nursing homes. In the period before WW1 she had a nursing Home at Sydenham. She Was embarrassed on several occasions by her nephew Reginald, bringing railway passengers suitcases to her house. These had been stolen at London Railway Stations. Reginald was eventually caught and sent to prison. At the outbreak of WW1 ( or maybe when conscription was introduced in 1916) he was conscripted into a labour battalion from which he deserted, was caught and shot.
Report 2 came from his great niece, who said her family legend was that Reginald had been unhappy after the death of his mother and his father's re-marriage. Reginald left home and at the outbreak of wasr enlisted in the army, possibly the Durham Light Infantry, under an assumed name. Reginald had met with a fatal accident, possibly in Scotland. These reports are completely different. The only common theme is the death of Reginald during WW1.
