In 1861 Theophilus Edward (5) aged 10, was a boarding pupil at the Blue Coat School, St.Philip's Churchyard in the town centre. Theophilus is later believed to have attended Five Ways Grammar School. There were two fellow pupils with the surname Bassett at the Blue Coat School but research indicates no direct relationship with Mary Anne Bassett. Both Theophilus and his brother, John Kentish, were nominated for the school of about 100 pupils aged 10-14 by the Bache family.
In 1871 Theophilus aged 20 was a clerk living at home. He married Eliza Baker in 1874 he developed literary interests and learnt Italian with a view to reading Dante and acting as an agent for Cassel's Sixpenny Classics. His demonstration set eventually passed to Eric. Theophilus became a clerk and bookkeeper the electro-plating industry. But by 1901 he was an electro-plater and gilder. He possibly rose to a more senior position but was not technically qualified, because at the age of 60 his employer, Mr Millward, said he felt the need to replace him by a technically-qualified manager. Theophilus talked him into delaying the change until he had chance to qualify. He then enrolled at Birmingham Technical School c.1911 (where he was remembered for many years afterwards) and took every certificate available in electro-plating, finishing, etc. (Brian Bucknall has in his possession Theophilus's algebra text-book, identified by his initials.) He kept his job until retirement was forced on him by a crippling accident - when he was passing a brewers dray on his bicycle, the leading offside horse reared and fell on Theophilus and his bicycle.
He was for many years churchwarden of All Saints Church. He brought a large family to the church where they filled a rented pew. If there was a visiting preacher or curate he would be asked to stay for Sunday dinner when there was always a roast. There was a long dining room table and a chaise longue at one side to accommodate a number of children on cushions. The grandchildren were brought to the church on All Saints Day which was a day of family reunion. Ralph reported that Christmas Day was also celebrated at his grandparents' house.
Theophilus was interested in classical music and had a pianola with many rolls of music. This pianola eventually passed to his son, William Claude. Theophilus is remembered as a small (height 5ft 3ins), bearded man with several eccentricities of speech. Evidently, in later life being keen on self-education, he spent his Sunday afternoons in the library of the Birmingham Institute.
