6. | Theobald Verdon (1.Michael1) was born in 1743 in (in/of) Northwich, Cheshire, England; died before 1770. Notes: He moved to Liverpool with his elder brother, Peter, about 1764 to seek work. His name was removed from the family pedigree on account of his marriage to Mary Broome "that Protestant woman from Armagh". He possibly took the name Verdin when disowned by his family. It is said that the very Catholic Verdon family regarded Theobald as a wicked man and made the sign of the cross whenever his name was mentioned. He worked as a Mariner. Not knowing that his wife was expecting their child, Theobald went to sea in 1766 and did not return for ten years. On his return he set up home in Newry, Ireland and never ever returned to Northwich. Mary remarried in Liverpool, England on 24 April 1770 and had two further children with her second husband, John Cook. His Will, dated 22 March 1852, also records him as the leaseholder of three properties in Tabley Street in Witton, Northwich which were occupied by Richard and Ann Blower, Thomas and Elizabeth Cross and William Forster and freeholder of his own home in Tabley Street. Notes: Joseph Verdin was Master of the Flat vessel "Antelope" and, with his brother Richard (see above), was the co-founder of the prosperous salt manufacturers 'Joseph Verdin & Sons', formerly known as 'Joseph and Richard Verdin', which rose rapidly to prominence in the boom years of 1860-1870. The Verdins were listed as shippers of white salt at Northwich in 1844 and as salt manufacturers by 1850 and by 1863 the family interests had spread to Winsford. In the 1851 Census his family are recorded as living at 211, Sandy Bank, Witton, Northwich, Cheshire, and in the 1861 Census at 96, Fleming Street, Witton, Northwich, Cheshire. He later lived with his large family at Highfield House in Wharton, Winsford, Cheshire. Joseph married Margaret Sadler on 1 Jun 1831 in Liverpool ,St Anns.
