1128 Being raised on a farm, in daily contact with livestock, was often a precurser to a career as a butcher. This indeed was Philips first trade. For about eight years following the death of his father in 1834 he was practising his trade in Bryn Celyn on Greenfield street. His premises were within a few doors of his sisters Elizabeth Jones, Mary, and Brother John. His property was rented from the local squire, Sir Pyers Mostyn. It was made up of two parcels of land, a half-acre croft and a dwelling in a half-acre plot. Philip payed a tithe of 4 shillings and two pence (4/2) (21new pence) per annum.
Somehow Philip learned the art of brewing. He quickly became proficient, for by 1843 he was describing himself as a master brewer and retailer of beer. He was still livoing in Bryn Celyn at that time. His second son, Llewellyn, became a partner as soon as he was old enough. The brewing business was known as Philip Dykins and son. with Philip retaining the retail business as his own.
Business boomed such that in 1870 Philip & Llewellyn took out a 21 year lease for a corn mill and brewery known as Holywell Mill (or Coed Bach Mill). This property was situated immediately downstream of the well. from which Holywell took it's name. Following Llewellyn's death in 1871 at the age of 33, Philip brought his son-in-law John Lloyd Price into the business.
After John Lloyd Price took over the Brewery in 1873, Philip usually described himself as a Gentleman indicating thayt he was well off, and having little to do with day to day affairs of the business. He moved from Bryn Celyn to Whitford Dtreet, to the west of high street. then in 1882 he moved into Pendre.

After his first wife Elizabeth died age 68 in 1879, he married his niece Elizabeth Dykins who was much younger than him and a servant in his household. When he died in 1891 he left a small fortune of some ?12,320.
