Biography of Abner Eachus (courtesy of Jim Eachus)

Cincinnati was founded in 1788. The last Indian resistance to white settlement in Ohio ended with the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. From then on there was a flood of settlers, many of them Revolutionary War veterans. Ohio became a state in 1803. Franklin township was formed in 1810.
According to information he gave census takers, Abner Eachus was born in Virginia and was 58 years old in 1850, which would make his birth about1792. There is a report that his gravestone says he was born in October, 1789. The picture on Findagrave doesn't show the dates.
The first record of Abner Eachus was his marriage to Elizabeth Troxel on Sept 5, 1816. They were married in Madison County, Ohio, where Elizabeth's parents lived. The 1820 and 1830 censuses shows John Troxell in Stokes Township, Madison County, Ohio.
Abner and Elizabeth's first child was a daughter. Name, date and place of birth are not recorded, but there is a daughter recorded in the 1820 census who is not in the 1830 census. Their first recorded child was Sarah Sally, born May 21, 1820 in Indiana. Elizabeth (Feb 28, 1823), Lewis (March 6, 1825), Caroline (1828), John Wesley (Oct 4, 1829), and Abner D (1831) were born in Indiana. The 1820 and 1830 censuses show Abner living in Franklin County, Indiana, so that is probably where those children were born. The census abbreviates Indiana as Ia, which has caused some confusion with Iowa. The censuses show another unnamed daughter born in 1826 or 1827.
Ancestry.com has two people who have DNA connections to Abner's descendants and could be his children. Sidney Eaches was born about 1817 in Ohio, and married Jacob Adams in 1834. She could be the first child, not mentioned in the 1830 census.
And there is Jane Eaches, born in 1822 in Indiana, and married John William Seeds in Franklin County Ohio in 1844. In the 1850 census, Jane is living with William Seeds, three children, and Louis Eaches, age 25 - probably Abner's son Lewis, who was married in 1852. If she is Abner's daughter, then Lewis/Louis would be her unmarried younger brother.
According to the 1883 History of Madison County, Abner rented the land he farmed in Indiana. In 1827 and 1828, there was action in civil court in Franklin County, Indiana, with Abner trying to get title to some land. It appears that he paid for the land, but the seller died before making out the deed. Indiana records show Abner selling land to Wm Wheate in 1830.
The last child, Harrison, was born in Ohio in 1832. So between the birth of Abner D in 1831 and the birth of Harrison in 1832, Abner and Elizabeth moved from Indiana back to Madison County, Ohio. One can guess that Elizabeth wanted to be near her parents. Her father died in 1835.
Mariah Eachus was born in 1842 out of wedlock to Abner's daughter Sarah. The father was David Woolsey. Abner sued him in 1842.
In the 1840 census, Abner gave his name as Abner Ithey (or Sthey -the handwriting is hard to read). Names of other members of the family were not recorded in 1840, but the location of this record is Stokes Township, and the demographics of family members matches. There were a number of Athey families in Ohio in 1840, including one in Union Township, Madison County. The names Ithey and Sthey don't seem to occur anywhere in the world.
In the 1850 census, Abner gave his name as Abner Evans, but the children are listed with the last name Eaches. In Pennsylvania, there was intermarriage between the Eachus family and the Evans family. Abner may have had a grandparent named Evans. There were also Evans's living in Madison County, so he may have taken the name from a neighbor.
Abner died August 13, 1856 without a will. He was buried in Lower Glade Cemetery. His oldest son, Lewis, was administrator of the estate. In the plan he presented to probate court, Lewis set aside some money to provide for Abner's widow, Elizabeth. He had to go back to the court in some embarrassment to report that, unknown to him, Abner had already sold his farm to his second son, John Wesley, with the agreement that Elizabeth would be cared for.
