    William enrolled to serve as a volunteer in the 1st Cheshire Regiment of Militia 5th Day of July 1855, but was released from his Militia engagement upon the condition of his enlistment to the 25th Kings Own Borderers, he enrolled in the 1st Battalion 25th Regiment of Foot 11th October 1855, at Chester Castle. He was 17 years & 10 months old. Regimental number 3051, He served for 21 years and 84 days, including, 4 years & 142 days in Gibralter, 2 years & 19 days in Malta and 3 year 54 days in Cananda. In all 21 tears his conduct was described as Very Good and was in possession of four good conduct badges. also in all that time he was never wounded. his records state that he was not in possession of a School Certificate.
    On his Army Medical History he is described as a weaver , born Prestbury, [Parish of] height 67 inces, circumference of Chest 32 inches, Eyes Blue, complexion Fair. Small Pox marks, None; Vacination Marks, Distinct; Hair Light; Pulse 72. Respiration 20 inspirations. Muscular development light, regular with a good temperment. He was discharges 4th April 1877 having completed 21 years service. [war achive A5-5]
    William's carear as a Private soldier in the 25th regiment of foot, took him to Canada, Ireland, Aldershot, etc and his children were born in these places.
