1915 started first class in metalwork then became a part time lecturer in mechanical engineering at manchester college of technology.
Apprenticeship at Naysmiths, patricroft until he was 21, then spent 2 years at worthington-simpson pump engineers in newark-on-trent. Then on to national gas co manchester as a draughtsman before starting as a constructional draughtsman at metrovickers in 1923. He is now a member of the institution of mechanical engineers.

James married Lizzie Derbyshire in 1924. Lizzie (daughter of James Derbyshire and Sarah Ann Jackson) was born on 29 Apr 1886 in Patricroft, Lancashire. England; died on 13 Jul 1959. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Letter from Grenville Atherton to Lisa Rayner 2000:
In 1912 received a letter from his MP confirmed later by the treasury to say that he had been appointed public auditor for the UK. Although he was qualified and capable of auditing many other companies accounts he preferred to stay with the Eccles and District Co-op society and writing political articles and giving seminars on free trade, marketing, political economics, contract law and accounting.

Notes:

Sarah Ann worked as a housemaid in a lot of different places. She had a secret ambition to be a Governess. In 1880 she secretly married James Derbyshire and lived at 3 Vine Grove, Winton, later moving to 1 Roberts Street, and then to 74 Ellesmere Street, finally moving to Walkden after her Husband died. Sarah Ann Derbyshire (nee jackson) wrote a diary and quite a bit of it was published in the local newspaper. The diary was held by her Grandson James Grenville of Atherton. After James died it passed to his son. the paper stories were stopped by one of her relatives because it was starting to make the family look bad. as she was a working lady!.

In a letter Jan 1989 from Grenville to Lottie Jackson he says he used to read to Sarah Ann when her eyesight was failing. Sarah was called 'Sally' by her friends

In letter from James Atherton to Lisa Rayner April 2000 says George died of a heart attack whilst taking a beast to salford cattle market, one of his sons George was with him.
