    Notes:

Joseph was not quite eighteen when the United States declared war on Great Britain in 1812. He served in Blincoe's Virginia Militia during the war and later applied for and recieved a bounty land warrent for his service. After the war Joseph entered the dry goods business in Alexandrai, initially as a partner with George Janney and John Morgan, But there partnership was dissolved by 1816, and a new partnership among Eaches, Morgan and Robert Braden, located on South Fairfax street, was formed in its stead.
On 27 November of that same year he married Ann McCormick, Quaker and member of the Fairfax MM. She maid "Acknowledgmeny" for marrying Joseph "out of unity" in 1817 and was recieved by the Alexandria MM in 1818. They resided at what is now 912 Cameron Street.
Joseph's partnership with Braden and Morgan was dissolved in 1821. He subsequently became a flour merchant, locating his business on King Street (near Fayette Street). Braden, Morgan & Eaches evidently retained an interest in a flour mill and dwelling located in Fauquier County untill 1824, when it was sold to Joseph Janney.
Joseph became, in the words of one historian, "Highly thought of". He held numerouse positions of public trust, including; Collector of taxes of the port of Alexandria; Mayor of Alexandria (1843-46); director of the Alexandria Library Company; commissioner in chancery; secretary of the Potomac Fire Insurance Company ; and president of the Alexandria Canal Company (1846-57).
Joseph was a prominent member of the Masonic Lodge of Washington, where he became a "Worshipful Master". When Marquis de LaFayette, French hero of the American Revolution, made his final tour through the United States in 1824-25, Joseph hosted a Masonic dinner at Clagett's Hotel (Gadsby's Tavern) for LaFayette in his honor on 21 Feb 1825 From the Records of the Alexandria Canal Company, a portrait of Joseph emerges as one who was articulate, forceful and constantly on guard regarding competitive threats to the continued economic success of the Canal Company in Particula and the City of Alexandria in general
Joseph died on 19 Dec 1857, after a long and painfull illness. he was buried in Ivy Hill Cemetery.
Following his death the board of directors of the Alexandria Canal Company expressed their "sense of great loss" over his passing, and noted officially that his "ability and zeal for the interests of the Company, are worthy of gratefull rememberance and commendation. " Joseph made his will on 9th April 1856 and it was proved on 4th Jan 1858. He divided his property among his surviving children.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Daniel Eachus was born on 18 Jan 1766 in Chester County, Pa; was christened in in Oak Virginia, Loudoun County, Virginia (son of Robert Eachus and Mary Griffith); died in 1834 in Loundoun, Virginia.

    Notes:

Oak Virginia was 20 miles from Laesborgh

Daniel lived in Loudoun County, Virginia. It appears he was well regarded in the community.
Daniel and two others (Frances W Luckett and Samuel Singleton) were appointed on December 31,
1818 by Burr Powell, President of the Board of Directors of Ashby's Gap Turnpike Company,
to serve as official inspectors for the purpose of verifying to the Governor that portions of the Turnpike were in fact completed. This appointment was confirmed by the Governor. On December 4, 1819, the three certified to the Governor that the subject portions were completed. (Calendar of Virginia State Papers, Vol 10, p480, p492)

Daniel became a miller and was part owner of at least two mills. He acquired a one half interest in his first mill, along with fellow Quaker Joseph Gore in 1803. The mill was part of a 196 acre tract located along Beaver Creek ( a tributary of Goose Creek). and then along with Robert Massey Powell he built his second mill in 1808 on a fifty acre tract located along Goose Creek. The area of the mill came to be called "Millsville" Two years later Daniel sold his half interest to Robert Powell. and acquired interests in at least two other mills, and was a party to more than two dozen real estate instruments during his life.

On 12th April 1815 Daniel Eachus was appointed to the board of directors of the Loudoun Company, the first known bank in Loudoun County. The Board of this institution consisted mostly of Quaker businessmen from Loudoun County. Unfortunately, in 1816, the Virgunia General Assembly, dominated by eastern Virginians who opposed the creation of additional unchartered banks, passed an act supressing all unchartered Virginia banks, including the Loudoun Company.

Daniel and his children were practising Quakers, and they belonged to the Southfork Meeting, which was an indulged meeting (branch) of the Goose Creek Monthly Meeting in the southern part of Loudoun County. Although Daniel seems to have been a "lapsed Quaker" one consequenc of which was that the Goose Creek MM Meeting Records for the relavent period contail only two references to him as a witness at Quaker wedding ceremonies, the last of these references was in 1795. As a "lapsed Quaker" member of the South Fork brance of the Goose Green MM, Daniel would have been in good company, for the more staid members of the Goose Creek MM were of the firm opinion that thier South Fork bretheren "Drank to excess, Fought, Gambled and in general were lax morally. ( Werner Janney and Asa Moore Janney, Ye Meeting Hous Small: A short Account of Friends in Loudoun County, Virginia, 1732-1980 [ Lincoln, Va p 154] ).

Daniel executed a deed regarding some property in Fauquieron 28 Nov 1829, and by the time of the 1830 U.S. census it appears he was living with his son Thomas. Daniel seems to disappear from the records altogether by 1834 and it is assumed he died about that year. He died intestate. As for his wife Mary, there is no record of her death or indeed whether she survived or predeceased Daniel.

Daniel married Mary. Mary was born on 22 Aug 1771 in Virginia, America. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Mary was born on 22 Aug 1771 in Virginia, America.

    Notes:

Daniel Eaches mary's husband seemed to be a lapsed Quaker one consequence of which was that the Goose Creek Monthly Meeting Records for the relevant period contain only two references to him as a witness at Quaker wedding ceremonies, the last of these was in 1795. Fortunately, Daniel kept a family record in his Bible. His wife was named Mary and was born 22 Aug 1771, but sadly he failed to record her maiden name. One presumes she was a fellow Quaker and member of the South fork brance of the Goose Creek Monthly Meeting. Moreover in view of Quaker onomastics (ie, nameing of children) one can further speculate that her father may have been named Joseph. (the name of her first born son), especially since none of the children of Robert Eachus Sr, or of Robert Eachus Jr, was so named

    Children:
    1. 2. Joseph Eachus was born on 18 Jul 1794 in Loundoun, Virginia, U.S.A.; died on 19 Dec 1857; was buried in 1857 in Ivy Hill Cemetery.
    2. Thomas Eachus was born on 17 Oct 1796 in Unison, Virginia, America; died on 11 Oct 1865.
    3. William Stephen Eachus was born on 16 Oct 1798 in Loundoun, Virginia, America; died after 1850.

    5. Alphred Cumpton Eachus was born on 26 Jul 1803 in Virginia, America.
    6. Daniel Albert Eachus was born on 5 Mar 1806 in Virginia, America.

  3. 6.  James McCormick was born about 1770.

James married Ann. Ann was born about 1772. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Ann was born about 1772.
    Children:
    1. 3. Ann McCormick was born in 0Sep 1797 in (in/of) Virginia, US; was christened in in 912 Cameron Street.; died on 4 Jul 1850; was buried in Ivy Hill Cemetery.

A Complaint was lodged against Robert Eachus Jr., on 6th Aug 1762 by the Uwchlan Monthly Meeting for alleged unfair dealing with a partner in business, and for using unsavery expressions. He admitted and apologized for the unsavery expressions, but denied the unfair dealing complaint, which was dropped due to insufficient evidence. On 9th Nov 1763 another complaint was made against him for allegedly "charging a friend falsely in public, using unsavery expressions and neglecting meetings". The second complaint ultimately proved to be his undoing, for he was disowned on 8th March 1764. Probably as a result of her husbands exile from the friends, less than a month later, on 5th April 1764, his wife Mary and their three children, Mary, William and Robert, applied for and received a certificate to remove to Sadsbury MM in Lancaster County, Pa

Robert married Mary Griffith on 27 Aug 1757 in Old Swedes Church, Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware.
