    Notes:

Thomas died, reportedly of heart disease on 11 oct 1865. His property was
valued at $10,000 in 1850. Thomas's Exectuter was George L Seaton.

Thomas Eaches was a Farmer and a Miller. Although he lived and Farmed just off Quaker Lane, Less than a mile south ofUnison, apparently his mill was located on Cromwell's Run near the Fauquier/Loudoun county line. Thomas's property was located in the heart of what became known as "Mosby's Confederacy," the area primarily in Fauquier, Loudoun and Fairfax Counties, in which Col. John S Mosby, commander of the "Partisan Rangers" conducted most of his querrilla operations against Union troops during the civil war. The homes and farms of people residing in this area were subject to frequent depredations and seizures during the Civil War. Some official some not, by both Union and Confederate forces.
One surviver of the period recalled the experience as follows:-
None but a surviver of the Civil War can comprehend the life the people of Mosby's Confederacy lived. Most of them subsisted on the barest necessities. Setting the table was a hollow farce, and grace before a meal was but a bitter burlesque. There was no tea, coffee, sugar or milk, no preserves or pickles, no bread except the corn pone or hard tack.
Since Quakers were resented by many Confederates because of their refusal to fight against the Union, Mosby and his men often selected the well tended farms of industrious Quakers for marauding. The worst blow came when Union General Phil Sheridan ordered Brevet Major General Wesley Merritt to mobilize his troops through "Mosby's Confederacy" where they were to "consume and destroy all forage and subsistance, burn all barns and mills and their contents, and drive off all stock in the region. The order, which Sheridan demanded was to be executed "Literally" was carried out by Merritt and his men, in what came to be called the "Burning Raid", during the last week of Nov 1864. Unofficial estimates of the damage varied, but all agreed that the devastation wrought upon Loudouners - Including Thomas and Delilah Eaches was staggering.
Thomas died, reportedly of heart disease on 11 Oct 1865, sixmonths after Lee's surrender at Appomattox. His will, which was dated 10 Aug 1865, devised his farm property to Delilah untill her death, with the remainder to his daughter Frances A (Eaches) Seaton and to the children of his other daughter Mary Jaen (Eaches) Carter, who predeceased him. He also set aside $3,333.33 to be loaned out on a secure basis, the interest from which was to be used for the care of his son Joseph G Eaches, who was described in a later chancery suit as a "Lunatic".
In 1871, Congress established the Southern Claims Commossion for the purpose of considering claims by Southerners who remained loyal to the federal goverment for the duration of the war and who had sufferd official Union confiscation or destruction of property. Over 200 loudoun citizens applied for compensation, including Delilah Eaches ( both in her own right and in behalf of her late husband) The Eaches total claim for property taken and destroyed was $1,843, of which Delilah was paid about half $957.30 in 1873.Delilah died interstate on 18th Nov 1889. Her son Joseph G Eaches, after her death went to live with his sister, Frances, untill her death in 1892. Joesph Eaches died on 10 May 1892.

Thomas married Delilah. Delilah was born on 2 Jun 1802 in Unison, Virginia, America; died in 1889. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  Daniel Eachus was born on 18 Jan 1766 in Chester County, Pa; was christened in in Oak Virginia, Loudoun County, Virginia (son of Robert Eachus and Mary Griffith); died in 1834 in Loundoun, Virginia.

    Notes:

Oak Virginia was 20 miles from Laesborgh

Daniel lived in Loudoun County, Virginia. It appears he was well regarded in the community.
Daniel and two others (Frances W Luckett and Samuel Singleton) were appointed on December 31,
1818 by Burr Powell, President of the Board of Directors of Ashby's Gap Turnpike Company,
to serve as official inspectors for the purpose of verifying to the Governor that portions of the Turnpike were in fact completed. This appointment was confirmed by the Governor. On December 4, 1819, the three certified to the Governor that the subject portions were completed. (Calendar of Virginia State Papers, Vol 10, p480, p492)

Daniel became a miller and was part owner of at least two mills. He acquired a one half interest in his first mill, along with fellow Quaker Joseph Gore in 1803. The mill was part of a 196 acre tract located along Beaver Creek ( a tributary of Goose Creek). and then along with Robert Massey Powell he built his second mill in 1808 on a fifty acre tract located along Goose Creek. The area of the mill came to be called "Millsville" Two years later Daniel sold his half interest to Robert Powell. and acquired interests in at least two other mills, and was a party to more than two dozen real estate instruments during his life.

On 12th April 1815 Daniel Eachus was appointed to the board of directors of the Loudoun Company, the first known bank in Loudoun County. The Board of this institution consisted mostly of Quaker businessmen from Loudoun County. Unfortunately, in 1816, the Virgunia General Assembly, dominated by eastern Virginians who opposed the creation of additional unchartered banks, passed an act supressing all unchartered Virginia banks, including the Loudoun Company.

Daniel and his children were practising Quakers, and they belonged to the Southfork Meeting, which was an indulged meeting (branch) of the Goose Creek Monthly Meeting in the southern part of Loudoun County. Although Daniel seems to have been a "lapsed Quaker" one consequenc of which was that the Goose Creek MM Meeting Records for the relavent period contail only two references to him as a witness at Quaker wedding ceremonies, the last of these references was in 1795. As a "lapsed Quaker" member of the South Fork brance of the Goose Green MM, Daniel would have been in good company, for the more staid members of the Goose Creek MM were of the firm opinion that thier South Fork bretheren "Drank to excess, Fought, Gambled and in general were lax morally. ( Werner Janney and Asa Moore Janney, Ye Meeting Hous Small: A short Account of Friends in Loudoun County, Virginia, 1732-1980 [ Lincoln, Va p 154] ).

Daniel executed a deed regarding some property in Fauquieron 28 Nov 1829, and by the time of the 1830 U.S. census it appears he was living with his son Thomas. Daniel seems to disappear from the records altogether by 1834 and it is assumed he died about that year. He died intestate. As for his wife Mary, there is no record of her death or indeed whether she survived or predeceased Daniel.

Daniel married Mary. Mary was born on 22 Aug 1771 in Virginia, America. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 13.  Mary was born on 22 Aug 1771 in Virginia, America.

    Notes:

Daniel Eaches mary's husband seemed to be a lapsed Quaker one consequence of which was that the Goose Creek Monthly Meeting Records for the relevant period contain only two references to him as a witness at Quaker wedding ceremonies, the last of these was in 1795. Fortunately, Daniel kept a family record in his Bible. His wife was named Mary and was born 22 Aug 1771, but sadly he failed to record her maiden name. One presumes she was a fellow Quaker and member of the South fork brance of the Goose Creek Monthly Meeting. Moreover in view of Quaker onomastics (ie, nameing of children) one can further speculate that her father may have been named Joseph. (the name of her first born son), especially since none of the children of Robert Eachus Sr, or of Robert Eachus Jr, was so named

    Children:
    1. Joseph Eachus was born on 18 Jul 1794 in Loundoun, Virginia, U.S.A.; died on 19 Dec 1857; was buried in 1857 in Ivy Hill Cemetery.
    2. 6. Thomas Eachus was born on 17 Oct 1796 in Unison, Virginia, America; died on 11 Oct 1865.
    3. William Stephen Eachus was born on 16 Oct 1798 in Loundoun, Virginia, America; died after 1850.
    4. Sarah Eachus was born on 5 Dec 1800 in Virginia, America.
    5. Alphred Cumpton Eachus was born on 26 Jul 1803 in Virginia, America.
