    Notes:

Thomas George Archer Eachus, My Father, Born in 1913 in Hindley, Wigan. He met my Mother whilst spending his leasure time in Manchester City Centre, She loved to go dancing and that's how they met. He was listed as a Window Cleaner on his marriage certificate, Almost immediately after his marriage in 1939 he went off to fight in WW2, he fought in Eygpt, and later in Burma where he had a bad time fighting the Japanese. He would never talk about the war no matter how many times I asked him. but he hated the Japanese till the day he died and would have nothing Japanese in the house. He returned home in 1946, and I was born in 1947.
He was a great one for do it yourself, and used to develop his own photo's. after he developed them he would put them on a sheet of glass infront of the fire, when they fell off they were dry. He used the fire for lots of things, If he wanted to drill a hole in a piece of wood for example, he would place a metal poka in the fire untill it was red hot, and then burn the hole in the wood, a lot less effort than drilling it. I always remember how he lit the fire every morning. he would place old newspapers on the grate first then wood and then pile it up with coal. then he would lite the paper, put a metal shuvel in front and cover the whole thing with an open piece of newspaper, when the paper went up in flames the fire was lit. he would then put the hot shuvel back outside the back door, untill the next day.

Murder in pool Street 1875 (A1/20)

The Boar War broke out in 1899, the Dutch-speaking Boers of the Transvaal and Orange Free State invaded the British Colonies, including the Cape, and at first made rapid progress due to surprise, their speed of manoevre (mostly mounted untill going into battle), courage and excellent marksmanship from the saddle. The British army and local units managed to prevent a major breakthrough and eventually extra troops arrived which steadily drove the Boers back into their own territory. In the end, their two republics were completely overrun.
With no given date for Archers arrival in Cape Colony, one cannot be sure of what actions he would have experienced, but the 4th battalions of regiments then were normally part-time ones who would serve in Britain. In the emergency, they would have become full-time for any volunteers willing to go abroad, so Archer may have been a part-time soldier prior to 1899. (Kingpin Notes MISC 1/16)

    Birth:
Macclesfield is a town in Cheshire East, England. It was originally a market town, and was granted a charter in 1261. The medieval town surrounded a hilltop that contained the Church of St Michael and the marketplace. Industry came to the town in the 18th century following the building of the first silk mill by Charles Roe in 1743. This industry grew with the building of more mills, and of houses incorporating weavers' garrets on the top floor, with large windows to light them. The mills were initially supplied with power from horses, or from the River Bollin, which ran through the town. Later, steam power was introduced. Communication was improved by the building of the Macclesfield Canal, which was completed in 1831. The silk industry declined from 1851, industry in the town diversified, and most of the surviving silk mills were converted into other industrial purposes or for domestic use. During the 20th century, some of the buildings were cleared from the town centre, and housing estates were built on the periphery of the town.
