Between 1865 and 1869 Richard signed up to the Royal Artillery and is in India. He is not great in the army. He returns in 1869 to 2 Cumberland Place, his parents address. He is then referred to as a barrister's clerk and solicitor's clerk. we do know that he worked for his mother's cousin Sir Richard BETHELL, who became LORD WESTBURY for a short while but he left soon after. At his death he was due to publish a biography on Lord Westbury and is using the name Richard KENNARD. The daughter of Lord Westbury, Lady Augusta PARKER is outraged and states that there is no relative of that name except for a cousin of her mother's who is actually called Richard NOVERRE and he was not with his father for very long. Anyway Richard dies just before the book is published and it is left to Thomas NASH to rewrite it and publish it.
