Notes: Extract's from a Book entitled " Men That Have Gone" Mr Thomas Todhunter was a joiner, and was much master a master of his craft as we have not had in Darlington either before or since his time. Sir Robert Eden, Bart of Windlestone & Sir William Chaytor of Clervaux Castle, thought highley of his operative skill, and the interior of their mansions present ample demonstrations of his adaptive judgement. His first rate workman, and he would have none else, were always supplied with the best tools, in addition to the contents of their respective "chests", and with such a stock of carpentary material as was not to be found elsewere between the Humber & the Tyne. Mr Todhunter died in 1834, and his business devolved to his eldest son, Mr Thomas Todhunter Junior, who did not fight the battle of the world so sucessfully as his father. We remember Mr Thomas Todhunter junior with feelings of affectionate regard. He was a worm hearted, large hearted young man, unhapply cursed by a belief in the popular proverb " Needs must when the devil drives", and when the flood came he drifted anyhow, anywhere with the tide. Poor Tom was richley gifted by nature; he had a minutely retentive memory, a wonderously correct application of character, and a keen perception of the ludicrous, which made him what we have said of somebody else, but may be pardoned for the repitition, " A fellow of infinet jest and exellent fancy" He was well read in history and could quote remote dates with accuracy, taking into account the diversity of events to which they referred. Thomas married Susanna Hall. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
