    (A) Grayhound: Built in Pembroke Royal Dockyard at a cost of ?41,394. Launched 15 June 1859. She was awooden screw stoop, displacement 1,260 tons, powerd by a two-cylinder horizontal expansion steam engine., with a single screw. Ships compliment 160. She was commissioned Plymouth 6 Feb 1860, and served in the Mediterranean untill 1861, From 1861 to 1864 she was sent to the North America & West Indies Station, and during her Commission from 1865 to 1869 she served on the west coast of Africa and the south-east coast of South America, She was reduced to Harber service in 1869, by 1879 she was being used as a break water at Devonport, and was eventually sold on 3rd April 1906

    (B) Orontes: Her design was produced by the Controller of the Navy She was launched from Cammell Laird shipbuilders at Birkenhead on 22 November 1862. In March 1863 she was completed and commissioned. On 11 November 1871 she left Quebec , bringing the city's last imperial garrison back to Britain In 1879 she brought the body of Louis Napol?eon, Prince Imperial , killed earlier that year in the Zulu War , back to Britain. She is also notable in fiction as the troopship which brought John Watson back to Britain during his convalescence after the 1880 Battle of Maiwand in the second paragraph of Arthur Conan Doyle 's 1887 Sherlock Holmes work A Study in Scarlet In 1893 she was sold and then broken up for scrap on the River Thames
