In 1900 Charles was serving in the Royal Navy, Liverpool, Lancashire. Around 1915 he was transferred to Devonport where he served as Div. Transport Officer for the remainder of the war, after which time he retired to Crowborough.
Charles grew up with his Walmsley relatives and his grandmother Caroline Walmsley nee Eachus was a significant figure to him.
