He is famouse for studies on the relationship of mental illness to brain injury, and for the development of Public Health polices in relation to mental health. and was involved with the following institutions; Royal Medical Society; West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum (1866 - 1875); Court of Chancery; Medico-Psychological Association; Royal Instiution; Royal Society.
    He was one of Charles Darwins most significent correspondents and collaborators.

    After his father died in 1805 William was brought up by his maternal grandparents on their farm and attended Stirling High School and Ediburgh University. In 1826/7 he gave warnings to Charles Darwin, then aged 17, of the forthcoming controversies between Science and Christian Beliefs. As a medical student he was a Radical and an athiest, welcoming the changes in revolutionery France and supporting democratic reform of the Church, Monachy and the Aristocracy.
    William A.F. Brown was one of the most significant asylum doctors of the nineteenth century at Montrose Asylum (1834-1838) in Angus, and later at Critchton Royal in Dumfries (1838-1857). He introduced activities for patients including writing, art group activity and drama. In 1857 he was appionted Commissioner in Lunacy for Scotland and in 1866 he was elected President of the Medico-Psycholgical Association.

    Joseph Verdin was Master of the Flat vessel "Antelope" and, with his brother Richard (see above), was the co-founder of the prosperous salt manufacturers 'Joseph Verdin & Sons', formerly known as 'Joseph and Richard Verdin', which rose rapidly to prominence in the boom years of 1860-1870. The Verdins were listed as shippers of white salt at Northwich in 1844 and as salt manufacturers by 1850 and by 1863 the family interests had spread to Winsford. In the 1851 Census his family are recorded as living at 211, Sandy Bank, Witton, Northwich, Cheshire, and in the 1861 Census at 96, Fleming Street, Witton, Northwich, Cheshire. He later lived with his large family at Highfield House in Wharton, Winsford, Cheshire.
