Note

John Kelsall said that he was born on the 8th of the 7th month ‎[September]‎ 1683, but the quaker records for the Lancaster Monthy Meeting records the birth as being on the 7th of the 7th month 1683. John had a bad foot, and he was slightly lame all his life. After the death of his grandmother in August 1699, John went to live with his uncle Timothy Cragg at Chapel House, Wyersdale. He was the first schoolmaster at Dolobran in North Wales but later he went to work at Coalbrookdale in Shropshire, Then he moved to Dolgellau first as a manager of Forges and Furnaces of the famous Quaker Ironmaster Abraham Darby, and later he was employed by Charles Lloyd. He was a zealous member of the society of Friends, travelling widely on their behalf, he was also a noted diarist, the originals of which are held at the Library of the soviety of Friend at 173 Euston Road, London.
