Notes

Note
Harold Married Annie Stead, ‎[daughter of Thomas Stead]‎ 24th December 1925, St Mary, Wardleworth, Rochdale, Lancashire.
Harold Cyril Carey was also known as Harry Newman. This was due to his mother Margaret Emma Hewitt, remarrying Fromhold Heinrich John Neumann.. Harold Carey / Harry Newman married Annie Stead from his home in George Street Rochdale Lancashire. He later moved to 24 Shawclough Road Healey, Rochdale. He is listed in Margaret Emma's family bible as 'Harold Newman born 2 March 1904. It is also known that Harold lived on Whitworth Road at some point in his life. The only other information known about Harold Carey / Newman is that given by his half brother Frederick Arthur Newman. and passed onto Arthur's daughter. Maxine, During WWII Harold served in the Royal Air force. He accompanied trucks to the blitz areas and had the job of clearing the areas. More often than not he had to take away the dead and the wounded soldiers. On cold bitter nights he would try to keep warm with a nip of rum, and used the same blankets that he had used to transfer the sick or dead. This may have contributed to the fact that he contacted pneumonia, and later tuberculosis. Harold became gravely ill and had to enter hospital. His half brother ‎[Frederick]‎ Arthur Newman, was very close to him in all respects. When Arthur was growing up as a child, with a step mother who often mistreated him, Harold would take Arthur under his wings and keep him safe for days, looking after him in a stable. Now it was Arthur's turn to take care of Harold. Arthur was serving in the Royal Navy and obtained special leave to return home. Arthur recalls carrying his half brother to the local pub, The Dyer's Arms, off Frederick Street, Littleborough, Lancashire, where they had their final drink together. That was Harold's last wish. He was so very weak at this stage and unable to take a step on his own. Arthur returned to the Navy after his leave expired, but he didn't see Harold again. Harold died at the age of 40 years, on the 11 August 1944.
