23497 | Tony Quirk's notes: Not shown as living at Family Home - 16 Dalton Street, Douglas, in 1901 Census. Living at 2 Crosby Terrace, Douglas, (where she apparently spent most of her childhood) being brought up by her maiden Aunt, Eleanor Gelling. She was supposedly lonely and Rose went to live with her to keep her company. She eventually left the house to Rose and her son Donald (equal shares). However when Donald was married and living in Ashton-under-Lyne he forced the sale of the house to realise his half of the equity. He eventually received Rose's half share on her death. Married to Captain MADDRELL and has son Don who was MHK. Captain Madrell went to Canada and when he asked Rose & Don to join him she refused. She later married STARKEY, although there is some suggestion she was not free to do so - Bigamist marriage? Possibly married STARKEY in Ashton-under-Lyne! Had twins as well who were adopted-(possibly reared in Laxey or one in Peel). | Bell, Mary Rose Gelling (I28782)

23499 | Transcript of a leter sent by Benjamin Fendal to Elizabeth's Father asking for her hand in marriage : Hon. Sir: Imprest with the propriety of a long established custom, I conceive it a duty incumbent on me, to make you acquainted with my affection for your amiable daughter with whom I had the pleasure of forming an acquantance during a visit at Col Stewart's. Should I be so fortunate as to gain your approbation and excite a return in her, confident I am, I shali conduct myself in a manor to warrent your sanction, and perpetuate her esteem, as I am not less sensible Sir, of the duty I shall owe you than the respect to which your daughter will be entitled from me, and shall conceive my self bound by that duty and respect to use every exertion in my power to render her happy. Permit me, Sir, to assure you, my determination is not precipitate, but the unchangeable result of mature reflection. Admiration of her person succeeded the first interview, the beauties of her mind, shone with superior luster, and quickly refines that admiration into a fixed esteem, our dispositions respond, that congeniality of sentiment from which happiness in the matrimonial state invariably places, I think exists between us. My Eliza's presence I have no doubt will dictate to her a mode of conduct that cannot fail meeting my approbation, and the future avocation of my life shall be the study of her happiness. My property and the lands of my estate is inconsiderable. If I think my prospects sufficiently flatting to justify a union. To Further particulars Sir, I refer you to Col. Stewart, should they be accessed necessarily we reside in the same neighbourhood, and he is not unacquainted with my situation. You may be Sir, somewhat surprised at receiving a written declaration, on duly act of this important nature, particuary as I am in the vicinity. Custom urges the propriety of a verbal one, but that unquerable diffidence, which generally attends youth. _________ _______ ______, and suggestive of the mood I have a _____. It is a subject which no doubt will require some consideration on your part, an oppertunity for that will now be afforded you. I am Sir with the highest respect. You observe. Benjamin T Fendall.
