| 1 | 1850 THAT POWERFUL THOROUGH-BRED HORSE AMURATH Late the property of the Right Hon. The Earl of Derby Now the Property of Mr JOHN EACHUS of Over, Cheshire. Thorough-bred mares at six guineas each, and ten shillings the groom; Half-bred mares at three guineas each, and five shillings the groom: the groom's fee to be paid at the time of covering. AMURATH is of a rich dark chestnut colour, stands 16 hands high, with great bone sinews,and fine action in all his paces. He was got by Langar the sire of Ellis, winner of the Great St Leger, at Doncaster, in 1836:-His dam Armlda by Rinaldo, grandam sister to Boz by Bussard- Bennington's dam by the Percy Arabian-Herod-Snap-Shepherd's Crab. At four years old at Chester, AMURATH, won 50 sovs added to a Sweepstakes beating Mr Price's Stafford, Sir R W Buckley's Azalia, Mr Johnson's Lucifer, Gen Yates Mersey, Mr Bowers Dovetail, Mr Shirley's Fury, Mr Barrows Burnley, and Mr Critchley's b.c. by Memnon. At Liverpool he won the Croxteth Stakes, Beating Mr Mostyn's Tom Shipman, Mr Nanny's Frier Tuck, Sir T Stanley's Jacob Faithful, and Lord Kilburne's c.f. by Actaeon. At Five years old at Liverpool he won the Aintree Stakes, also a sweepstake and the Waterloo cup. At Six years old after covering a great number of mares he won a plate at Shrewsbury. At Heaton Park he won the Earl of Wilton's Plate of ?100. AMURATH in the years 1838, 1839 and 1840 obtained the premium at the Lancaster Agricultural Meeting for the best thorough-bred Stallion. Also at Preston he gained the Agricultural Society's Premium for Four Years, viz 1838,1839.1840 and 1841, as the best bred stallion shown. His stock obtained the premiums at Lancaster and other Agricultural meetings as being the best young stock got by any horse. AMURATH has proved himself a sure foal-getter:-his stock are remarkably good looking and of great size and very powerful:- He is the sire of that celebrated horse ABDIEL (the property of Lord Stanly). And also the sire of BOWSTRING (also the property of Lord Stanly) AMURATH Will attend the following places health permitting Every Monday Morning by Weaverham Gate, through Aston to the Hare and Hounds, Crowton, where he will stop till eleven o'clock thence by the Red Lion, Norley through Woodside, Manly and Ashton, to the Royal Oak, Kelsall, where he will stop till four, and thence to his own stable at Over, where he will remain all night. TUESDAY through Wettenhall, by the High-way-side, to the WheatSheaf, Four Lanes Ends, thence through Eaton and Little Budworth to his own Stable. THURSDAY to the White Bear, Middlewich thence to Mr C Plant's Red Lion, Holmes Chapel, where he will stop till Twelve. thence by Brereton Green to the George Inn, Sandbach where he will stop till five, thence to his own stable. FRIDAY through Davenham to the George and Dragon, Northwich, where he will stop till four and from thence to his own stable. SATURDAY through Minshull to the Coach and Horses, Bradfield Green where he will stop till twelve, thence through Leighton to the Union Inn, Nantwich where he will stop till five, thence to his own stable at Over, where he will remain untill Monday morning. | 18 | Phineas Eachus son of John Eachus & Hannah Haines, was at one time a large landowner, Owning much of the present site of West Chester. Where he was from 1762 to 1768 the proprietor of the first inn, which was called the Turks Head Tavern**. He was also the owner of the Original Homestead. Becoming surety for his friends, he lost the property, The land passing into the possession of Isaac Matlock. and the Inn being purchased by John Hoopes. Goshen MM minutes: 9th Dec 1768 Phineas Eachus uncle, William Eachus lost money by being security for him. 6th Jan 1769 Phineas Eachus disowned. 8th Feb 1771 Sarah wife of Phineas disowned. List of Capt. Joseph Johnsons Company of the Township of Goshen 1781. Phineas is listed as private 3rd class.. ** His Grandfather Robert Eachus sailed to America with one of the ships provided by the Minshull Family, The Turks Head was the Minshull Family Coat of Arms Background; The history of West Chester is intimately connected to its role as a transportation hub. West Chester is situated on high ground between the Brandywine and Chester Creek watersheds, at a point that attracted travellers since the earliest days of recorded history, The Great Minquas Trail of the Lenni Lenape passed through the area in the 17th century, connecting settlements and trading posts in the lower Schuylkill Valley with fur-producing regions to the west. The first roads in the area were laid out in the early eighteenth century. Although neither the "Old Lancaster Road" (US30) not the "Old Baltimore Pike"(US1) passed through West Chester, William Penn's "Street Road"(PA926) passed a short distance to the south, and the "Strasburg Road" passed along what later became the north edge of the borough. A road from Wilmington to Reading (PA100) passed directly through the centre of the future borough, and another early road(PA100) ran southwest from the site to Jefferis' Ford on the Brandywine, near modern Lenape Park. In 1762, a local cooper named Phineas Eachus applied to the Pennsylvania Legilsature for permission to open a "public house" for travellers on the Wilmington-to-Reading Road, at the intersection (presently Gay and High Streets) with the road from Jefferis' Ford to Philadelphia. Permission was granted, and Eachus' house became the "Turks Head Tavern", named for the sign used to mark its location. That Tavern, and its surrounding community, became the nucleus for the borough of West Chester, which was incorperated on March 20, 1799. | 22 | "Jim" was a farmer at White Hall between Mackville and Willisburg, Washington Co, Ky. prior to 1920 he lived at "The Old Toll House" on the Harrodsburg - Cornishville Road in Mercer County. He was respected in his community as a good neighbour and friend, known as "Honest Jim". His Eldest Daughter Gene described her father as follows " Jim was a man with a short temper who believed in hard work and discipline. He was thrifty with the doller and his word was law in his home. He died at the A.D. Price Memorial Hospital, of diabetes and "complicated troubles" He had previousley been for some time at Graham Springs in Harrodsburg for treatment. | 24 | "Thomas and Mary and their children left England and came to Pennsylvania sometime before 1698. They settled in Chester County, west of Philadelphia, where Thomas was a yeoman. In 1699 or 1700 they bought 238 acres near Thornbury and on September 22, 1701, he received a land grant of 500 acres near East Marlborough from William Penn, for which he paid a yearly rent of 5 shillings. The house they lived in at Thornbury, called "Springhouse" because of a running spring that still flows out of the cellar, is still there today, located on Street Road, near Shiloh Road, and is owned (as of 1982) by the Moody family."1 Thomas Mercer was Quaker. He was born at Aynho-on-the-Hill, Northampton, England, in December 1655. He was the son of Edward Mercer and Elizabeth Whitcher . Thomas Mercer was christened at Thorpe Mandeville, Aynho-on-the-Hill, Northampton, England,, on 15 January 1656; Thorpe Mandeville registers show the baptisms for all of Edward and Elizabeth's children, as well as this Edward's (son of Edward and Susanna) and his four sisters. He married Mary Greenaway in 1687 at Aynho-on-the-Hill, Northampton, England. Thomas left a will on 17 March 1715 at Thornbury, Chester, Pennsylvania; Chester County will Book A page 40 Thomas Mercer of Thornbury. 17/3/1715. 13/9/1716. A. 40. Provides for wife Mary. To eldest son Thomas after wifes decease or marriage, my new dwelling plantation containing my estate 238 acres. To son Thomas' son Daniel 1/2 of 500 acres of land in Marlborough which lieth next to Nathl Newlins land. To son Joseph the other 1/2 said 500 acres whereon son Thomas now lives. To my 3 daughters, viz Mary, Elizabeth and Ann, ?20 each. To sons in law Wm. Pennil, Joseph Woodward and Joshua Peirce one pistole each. Remainder of moveables to wife and son Thomas. Executors: wife Mary.
